Technical Advice · Moving Walks
Moving walk maintenance, repair or modernization: how should an owner decide?
The appropriate decision depends on the moving walk's actual condition, maintenance quality, reliability, safety-related concerns, component supportability, repair history, and remaining useful life. An older installation does not automatically require replacement, while repeated repairs may not be economical when major systems are deteriorating.
Start with an equipment assessment
The review should consider operating performance and the condition of major mechanical and electrical systems, treadway components, tracks, handrails and drives, controls, safety devices, entrances, maintenance condition, and other installation-specific equipment.
Determine whether the problem is maintenance or equipment condition
Recurring shutdowns or performance problems may result from adjustment, lubrication, cleaning, or other maintenance deficiencies. In other cases, worn, obsolete, or unsupported components may make repair increasingly difficult or expensive. Separating those conditions is important before committing capital.
Plan modernization around the installation
If modernization or replacement is appropriate, the scope should reflect equipment condition, facility operations, shutdown constraints, performance requirements, safety and code considerations, testing, documentation, warranty, and long-term maintenance requirements.
